When it comes to building muscle, Arnold Schwarzenegger is uniquely qualified to tackle the subject. In a recent Daily Pump Newsletter, Schwarzenegger shared why growing muscle promotes longevity and several other health benefits.

Arnold Schwarzenegger came from humble beginnings, slowly working his way up to a bodybuilding legend. During the 1970s and 80s, Schwarzenegger managed to earn a total of seven Mr. Olympia titles. While crafting his legacy, he was pushed by Lou Ferrigno, Franco Columbo, and Frank Zane.

He’s long stepped away from the stage, but Schwarzenegger’s love for the sport hasn’t waned. In 1989, he co-founded the annual Arnold Sports Festival with the late Jim Lorimer. His role in the bodybuilding community has only grown since the marquee show’s inception. It is considered the second-most prestigious event on the bodybuilding calendar behind Mr. Olympia.

At 75 years old, Schwarzenegger has prioritized his health in retirement. The last time he offered fans advice, Arnold underlined the importance of developing a consistent workout routine. Once a training routine has been established, he said keeping momentum is paramount. For his latest fitness tip, Schwarzenegger shared why building muscle is connected to a healthier weight and longer lifespan.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Opens Up on The Value of Building Muscle

In a recent newsletter, Schwarzenegger compared the caloric demands of a pound of fat versus a pound of muscle. According to Schwarzenegger, holding more muscle instead of fat is associated with healthy body weight, processing foods more efficiently, improving blood sugar, protecting against cardiovascular diseases, and many other benefits.

“Ever wonder how many calories a pound of muscle burns? For nearly 30 years, the most common answer you’ll find is that a pound of muscle burns about 50 calories per day. While the Internet is great for many things, this isn’t one of them. In reality, on average, a pound of muscle will burn about six calories per day (potentially up to 10 calories). What’s crazy is that the real metabolic value was first established in 1998 and then determined again in 2010.

For comparison, a pound of fat burns about two calories per day. This might cause you to question the value of building muscle, but that would be a mistake. In addition to the metabolic advantage, having more muscle is connected to expanding lifespan (see the next item), maintaining a healthy weight (especially after losing fat), processing food (including sugar) more efficiently, improving blood sugar, protecting against cardiovascular disease, reducing inflammation, improving brain health, and strengthening bone health.”

The bodybuilding legend specified that muscle-building training sessions can ‘elevate’ caloric burn for up to 48 hours after the workout.

“Plus, muscle-building workouts can elevate your calorie burn up to 48 hours after you stop your workout. The lower calorie burn is just a good reminder that even if you’re adding muscle, the metabolic change isn’t enough to rationalize overeating too much, which is something that commonly happens that causes people to feel stuck despite their hard work,” Arnold Schwarzenegger shared in his latest newsletter.

Schwarzenegger took a comprehensive approach to building muscle and recently shared his healthy diet and habit checklist with fans. Some of the more important aspects of his lesson were consuming at least 25 grams of fiber, limiting saturated fat, and eating more than 400 grams of fruit/vegetables on a daily basis.

While his fitness priorities have changed since getting older, muscle-building is still a vital part of Arnold’s routine. Whether it’s an adequate diet or proper training, Schwarzenegger hopes to inspire healthier practices in 2023.

Everyone deserves forgiveness for what they’ve done. I’m sure Arnold feels terrible about the mistakes that he’s made, and has chosen to make reparations for them. I choose to remember Arnold for the good and fun things he has contributed.
