Joseph Baena, son of bodybuilding legend Arnold Schwarzenegger, continues to sculpt his physique as an aspiring actor. In a recent YouTube collaboration, Baena joined Mike O’Hearn for an arm workout demonstration focused on the biceps and triceps.

Bodybuilding veteran Mike O’Hearn is revered for his strength and longevity. Having made splashes in other sports like powerlifting, arm wrestling, and strongman, O’Hearn never turns his back on a challenge. At 54 years old, O’Hearn maintains a shredded physique and is known for lifting heavy weight yet always makes it look effortless.

O’Hearn and Joseph Baena have a history of working out with each other. Witnessing Schwarzenegger’s career, O’Hearn hopes to teach Baena valuable lessons in the gym to help him live to be healthy and fit like his father at 76.

With the hope of one day making it in Hollywood, Baena recently laid out his physique goals for 2023. He made it clear that his aim was to nail a role in a superhero movie but understands that it will take a ‘superhero body.’

O’Hearn and Baena’s exercise list can be found below:

  • Skull Crushers
  • Dumbbell Seated Overhead Tricep Extension

“Now, this exercise right here, it’s really for the triceps but Mike calls this the elbow warmer. He’s warming up the elbows. Now what do I use this exercise for? Today I’m going to use them to warm up the elbows because we’re on Mike’s regimen today. So I’m going to start with 20s because I just got here,” said Baena.

“I just want to get big,” added Baena.

“I like you leading though. I like you leading because I know that you got the old school knowledge and the new school knowledge. So if there’s something this old dog could learn…” O’Hearn said. “I think we go bi, tri, bi, tri, but not a superset where we’re fatiguing.”

Next, O’Hearn discussed the mental aspects of training and how it can empower the mind.

“I understand your age and the desire to outwork everybody. I lived that. I lived that. And so, I fully understand it. I don’t want to – I know everybody out there will be like, ‘That’s not the way to do it, taper it.’ Well, the better part of that, let’s say your body doesn’t grow as much as others because you go to that level but your mind grows ten-fold when everyone else trains to 90%, 80% and get out and recover.

Where you go, ‘Forget this,’ and you go off. Leash off, and you go ballistic. There’s a mental approach to that that I think all the greatest – they all had that. That separates a guy that’s trying to stay in the textbook,” shared O’Hearn.

“I like the direct power that you have to have on the contraction compared to a machine. There’s little details on a machine compared to free weight. You’re holding it, you’re controlling it, you’re not just dropping it and pushing it up. You’re moving through it and I kind of like that,” O’Hearn said.

“I just started implementing this into my arm routine as of recently,” said Baena.

O’Hearn and Baena also talked about the role of genetics when it comes to stronger body parts.

“You’re such a youngster. And I think when you’re young like I did, like I can do Tom’s leg workout and get his legs. That was like, ‘Come on kid, common sense.’ Genetic gifts are genetic gifts but still attempt it. Still doing what you’re doing, still try. Because there’s something he’s doing to connect to his muscle,” replied O’Hearn.

A member of the bodybuilding community for decades, O’Hearn has picked up numerous training tactics and strategies. He opened up to fans recently about his work with Open veteran Kai Greene. O’Hearn explained that Greene had a unique mastery of the mind-muscle connection, especially when it came to back training.

Even though Baena appears dead set on acting, fans always appreciate seeing him perform in the gym. As for Mike O’Hearn, he stressed completing slow and controlled reps should you decide to try this two-exercise arm-building routine.
