Jay Cutler Talks Food Poisoning Setback, Training Burnout, and Shares Back Workout 

Cutler said his 'favorite cheat meal ever' almost landed him in the hospital which has affected his recent training schedule.

Bodybuilding legend Jay Cutler is updating fans following his successful physique transformation in August. In a YouTube video published on September 26, 2023, Cutler reflected on his training habits in retirement. He also discussed his recent bout with food poisoning after enjoying a cheat meal at In-N-Out Burger. 

Cutler, a former four-time Mr. Olympia titleholder, is no stranger to setbacks. Despite a string of runner-up finishes to Ronnie Coleman, Cutler’s work ethic, grit, and on-stage tenacity finally caught up with “The King” in 2006.

In addition to three Arnold Classic victories, Cutler became the only Mr. Olympia to win back a title lost, which he achieved at the 2009 contest after avenging his defeat to third-place finisher Dexter Jackson and Branch Warren. “The Comeback Kid” last competed at the 2013 Mr. Olympia in sixth place, but has remained a face of the sport since his departure.

Cutler, who describes In-N-Out Burger as his “favorite cheat meal ever,” said he was “throwing up extremely bad” after consuming it. 

“I actually stopped and I’m not going to lie, I stopped at In N Out Burger – my favorite place to eat and you know… I haven’t been really eating poorly since the fit-for-50 which I’m going to talk about a little bit in this video. But I got a burger. I got home to Vegas and by the time I got home I had to run to the toilet and you guys know what that means. 

Started to feel a little under the weather, my stomach just didn’t feel right, I had plans to go to the gym later that day. I laid down and in the middle of the night I started throwing up and that was the end of it. I had crazy food poisoning. You could imagine my thought process right? My favorite cheat meal ever, I always talk about my In N Out,” said Jay Cutler. 

“I’m wondering if maybe I ate something undercooked but needless to say, I ended up with food poisoning. Been a long time since that happened to me, and I was throwing up extremely bad. We actually got in the car to go to the hospital in the middle of the night but I said you know what I think I’m okay. Fortunately, I made it through the rest and of course, I’m better now.”

Given the scare, Cutler admits he wasn’t fit to train for a few days. 

“I’ve had a little setback with the training where I didn’t train for a couple days and then I did train for a few days and it seemed like every time I was good, I got up and did my cardio in the morning, I got back to eating normal, then all of a sudden, I would train and my stomach would be upset.” 

With time to heal, the 50-year-old bodybuilding icon says he’s feeling “100%.” As for his training tendencies, Cutler revealed he still works out every body part during the week, even smaller muscles like the forearms. 

“I feel 100% right now, but the question is, where is the next step for me, what is the next goal… I think that’s really what this whole YouTube video is about is… I need goals. I need certain things I shoot for. Obviously, I’m not getting back on stage. I did the big transformation. I have different thoughts or processes learning through the age now.” 

“I tend to train every body part still. I even did forearms the other day because I still want to have certain muscle definition but the truth is: it would probably not take a lot because of my muscle density and maturity and what I did for a living to maintain the physique I have now. I bet my fit-for-50 could have been done with a lot less training but I tend to be an extremist when it comes to training and pushing myself to the next level.”

Given that Cutler held the Mr. Olympia crown for four years, he has plenty of interest in the upcoming contest this November. In a recent Cutler Cast Podcast, Jay took a closer look at the back poses of Samson Dauda and Derek Lunsford — two leading frontrunners many consider to be top threats to Hadi Choopan’s title. The Massachusetts native won’t make official predictions but went on record saying Lunsford’s back double biceps pose is “just so far from everyone else’s.”

Cutler has also helped athletes prepare for the nearing competition. Recently, the former Mr. Olympia connected with Urs Kalecinski, a rising force in the Classic Physique category. Kalecinski posed alongside Cutler as well. Fans look forward to seeing “The Miracle Bear” take to the stage in an effort to dethrone the reigning four-time Classic Physique Olympia Chris Bumstead. 

From training sessions to 2023 Mr. Olympia analysis, Cutler’s love for bodybuilding is always on display. While he’s unsure of his next physique goal, Cutler is happily enjoying retirement with no injuries or joint issues.
