Bodybuilding legend Jay Cutler took part in a recent JayWalking episode to talk about his 2023 physique transformation. During the video, Cutler discussed his training, diet, and the role of performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) in bodybuilding.

Few bodybuilders have reached the heights of Jay Cutler. During the 2000s, he cemented himself as an all-time great, winning a total of four Sandow trophies. In 2006, he dethroned eight-time winner Ronnie Coleman, ending the ‘The King’s’ long-standing reign. Many in the sport agree that Cutler and Coleman elevated the sport’s notoriety following their intense rivalry.

Last year, Cutler teased a bodybuilding comeback with a physique update. Fans thought he’d make a great addition to the 2023 Masters Olympia roster, but Cutler quickly dismissed the show and emphasized that he wasn’t returning to a ‘competition stage.‘

Instead, the 49-year-old announced he was training to transform his physique as part of a ‘fit for 50’ challenge. Since making the goal public, Jay committed strictly to testosterone replacement therapy and said he won’t use Trenbolone. In his latest YouTube video, Cutler opened up about his training, diet, and the role of PEDs in the sport today.

Jay Cutler Training ‘Consistent,’ Talks Steroid Protocols: ‘We Used Compounds to Bulk, and Some to ‘Get Cut Up’

Cutler specified that he’s been training consistently and has to force himself to take a day off from working out.

“Yeah – today – I been training pretty consistent man, not taking days off. I almost have to force myself these days to take a day off,” Jay Cutler said. “What was it 50 days [trained in a row]. When did I do that. I know I wasn’t competing. It’s so funny because as I got a little older now, I always had these theories, of you need a day off after back, a day off after legs, you shouldn’t train fasted – and now look at all these things I’m trying.”

He said protocols used during his ‘heyday’ were to either bulk him up or get him ‘cut.’

“You know we all have our different training theories, there’s no right or wrong way. The hard part that I have these days are that you know – people really think that the protocol and that means the drug use is way more intense for the pros or the people like myself in the heyday right.

I talked a little bit about it. Obviously, we had protocol that you know people followed as far as like, hey we used compounds to bulk and then you use certain compounds to cut up but we all know the nutrition and the cutting off of certain foods and whatever are going to help. You’re not just going to change compounds and get absolutely shredded,” says Cutler.

According to Cutler, Growth Hormone (GH) didn’t help him stay lean so he still had to diet aggressively to lose weight as a professional.

“It’s like the people that say, ‘oh I took GH and I can eat whatever I want and stay lean.’ I can honestly tell you like using GH never really – did it – maybe I felt a little fuller but I still had to diet my ass off in order to lose weight you know.”

“They just think hey you’re lying if you’re saying your only using this or that. But you know, the availability of whatever else. As much as today, there’s more prescriptions going on than when it was when we were going on. It’s almost – I don’t want to say it’s accepted, but today, it’s more relevant. Like there’s more studies, there’s more research on what it should be.”

Cutler mentioned that testosterone clinics didn’t exist during his prime. He said cycling on and off drugs was ‘very common’ and that it always ‘worked well’ for him.

“There was no such thing as HRT or whatever else, cycle on cycle off was very common. And I’ve been called – you know, inexperienced for doing that or ignorant right. But it seemed to always work well for me, as far as receptors and whatever else. You know, I keep going back and forth on this whole transformation process, trust me, there’s a lot of days that I feel – man, do I want to turn to volume up. It’s like me getting up and eating at two in the morning.”

Before calling it a day, Cutler revealed what type of breakfasts he’s been having. In addition, he explained why working out at 9 P.M. is his best session of the day.

“I forced myself to get up and I had egg whites and a whole egg. I had two slices of Ezikiel and a big bowl of oatmeal. Now I wake up this morning and I feel, that was at two, so I probably laid back down it was three. So, that wasn’t that long ago. That wasn’t that long ago. I feel good right now,” says Cutler.

“You know what, yes, my workouts are better. But the workouts are best at like nine at night. Yes, I feel the best because I’ve gotten four meals in by nine for sure. Yeah, I mean I’ve noticed that I’m better pumped, fuller, I’m hydrated.”

This isn’t the first time that Cutler has shed light on steroid protocols. In a Muscular Development interview, Jay shared that he would cruise on and off substances throughout his bodybuilding journey. He couldn’t remember exactly what drugs he’s taken but insisted he used as many compounds as possible at the start of his career.

Anyone who has used steroids in sports has never achieved anything. Well maybe a freak-status but no victories whatsoever. Regardless whether that sport organization has banned PED:s or not a ped user is a cheater who has cheated everyone and most importantly himself.
