One of the strongest pound-for-pound deadlifters in the world, Jamal Browner once again proved his prowess for the deadlift in a recent training session. Jamal can deadlift some insane weight, but usually pulls with a sumo stance, and some people consider it easier than conventional. On Feb. 8, 2022, the three-time Hybrid Showdown champ took to his Instagram and shared a video of him pulling a massive deadlift of 410 kg (904 lbs) done with a conventional stance, which surprised many people.
Jamal always weighs around 110 kg (242.5 lbs), which means this deadlift is over 3.5x his bodyweight. Alongside pulling with a conventional stance, Jamal only used a lifting belt to aid him in the lift. This marks the lift as his new Raw Conventional Deadlift PR. Jamal is now also a part of the 900 lbs Deadlift Club in both the sumo and conventional lifts.
You can watch the lift here:
“Whew 😅 I was nervous, but I’m really happy with how conventional is moving. Officially a 900lb puller both ways. I have one more single next week 👀😈,”

Jamal Browner’s Career And Achievements
At 27 years of age, Browner is still relatively early in his powerlifting career. He has competed in 15 sanctioned competitions and won 10 of those. Most notably the 2020 WRPF Hybrid Showdown II, as it was probably Jamal’s greatest competition performance. In addition to winning the competition, Jamal set a World Record Deadlift and an All-Time World Record Total in the 110 kg category.
Jamal’s official (done in competition) raw PRs are:
- Squat: 365 kg (804.7 lbs) (2021 WRPF Hybrid Showdown III)
- Bench Press: 225 kg (496 lbs) (2021 WRPF Hybrid Showdown III)
- Deadlift: 440.5 kg (971.1 lbs) World Record (2020 WRPF Hybrid Showdown II)
- Total: 1000 kg (2204.6 lbs) All-Time World Record (2021 WRPF Hybrid Showdown III)
It seems like grip strength is a limiting factor for Jamal’s deadlifts, as his training deadlift PR is 483 kg (1065 lbs). It was done with wrist wraps, which are illegal in powerlifting. However, this number is extremely close to Hafthor Bjornsson’s Deadlift World Record of 501 kg (1104.5 lbs), despite Jamal being a lot lighter in bodyweight.

Jamal Browner proved that he is a freak of nature and that he can pull enormous weight however he wants. His reasoning for using the sumo is very understandable, but it will be fun to see Jamal pull conventional once more next week.
