Derek Lunsford continues to excel in the realm of bodybuilding. His recent physique update before his second Olympia appearance in the Open division appears promising, as he struck a few poses and displayed a readiness that’s hard to miss. After his victory at the 2021 Olympia, Lunsford really packed on some serious muscle. This meant he couldn’t easily fit into his previous weight class anymore. We all got a good look at his gains when he did a guest pose at the 2022 Pittsburgh Pro – he stood out big time. So, the logical step was to move him into the Men’s Open category, where he could make the most of his impressive size.

Last year, during the early summer months, there was a lot of uncertainty swirling around whether Lunsford could even make it to the Olympia. He didn’t have that coveted special invitation, and to top it off, the weight restrictions for Men’s 212 posed a problem. Trimming down in time to defend his title from the 2021 Olympia just wouldn’t be possible. Surprisingly, Lunsford received a special invitation to compete in the Men’s Open during the biggest show of the year in 2022.

The 2022 Olympia marked his Open Bodybuilding debut, and boy, did he impress on that big stage. Now, he’s a favorite to snatch that title. And that video of him striking poses? Well, that was after a good chest workout, all thanks to the guidance of Hany Rambod, the expert who’s guided many champs to Olympia glory.

After finishing second in his debut competition in the Open class, Derek Lunsford made sure to leave an impression on the fans and judges alike. He presented a complete package, with the perfect combination of size, symmetry, and conditioning. Moments after the decision was out, Derek took it to his Instagram and wrote:

“This is just the beginning… and what a beginning it has been…@hanyrambod what you’ve done for me beyond the stage has impacted my life forever. I’m grateful to have you in my corner and helping me seek my fullest potential. This is just the beginning… and what a beginning it has been.”

Continuing by congratulating Hadi Choopan, he wrote:

“There are so many (not in the photo) who support me in their each individual ways. I could go on and on and on mentioning names and things I’m thankful for. I said it before and I will continue to say it… God’s plan is perfect.”

A glimpse into Derek’s current physique

Recently, Derek posted a physique update via his recent Instagram post where he can be seen posing. In the video, he appears quite shredded and dry considering he is 12 weeks out from the Mr. Olympia 2023. Derek is the fan favorite at the moment and is seen as a threat by every athlete in his lineup, including current champion Hadi Choopan and 2021 Arnold Classic winner Nick Walker. One impressive feature of his current physique is his huge quads that instantly catch your eye. His legs show off excellent conditioning, with visible vascularity and cross striations, even well before the contest day.
