The 2022 NOBULL CrossFit Games came back to Madison, Wisconsin, to display five days of action from Aug. 3-7, 2022. The 16th edition of the most prestigious CrossFit competition in the world traditionally gathered the greatest Individual athletes and Teams in order to find out who the Fittest On Earth® actually are.
Following the completion of 13 workouts, each made to test out some specific aspects of fitness, Justin Medeiros and Tia-Clair Toomey came out victorious. Justin won the men’s division of the 2022 NOBULL CrossFit Games for the second year in a row, while Toomey became the winningest CrossFit athlete in history with her sixth win. The Teams division was absolutely dominated by CrossFit Mayhem Freedom, which was expected even prior to the competition.

Dani Speegle dominated almost everyone in this workout, but she couldn’t even get close to Laura Horvath who was in a league of her own. In addition, Laura’s performance moved her up to fifth place overall, which had not been expected in the past few days.
Tia-Clair Toomey had a mid-table finish, but luckily for her, Mal O’Brien surprisingly placed even lower than her. So, Tia-Clair went from a situation where she could lose a significant part of her lead, to somehow expanding the gap even more.

Day 4 — Saturday, August 6th Individual Workouts Recap
Workout 8 — Rinse ‘N’ Repeat
Every 2 minutes:
- 50-yard swim
- 8-cal Ski Erg*
*Add 2 calories each round for 6 rounds, then complete as many calories as possible for rounds 7 and 8.
Women’s division
- Lucy Campbell — 138 calories
- Amanda Barnhart — 134 calories
- Laura Horvath — 133 calories
- Tia-Clair Toomey — 131 calories
- Kara Saunders — 130 calories
- Haley Adams — 129 calories
- Matilde Garnes — 129 calories
- Mallory O’Brien — 128 calories
- Arielle Loewen — 128 calories
- Brooke Wells — 127 calories
Swimming events always change up the rankings of the CrossFit Games and this year is no exception. As an experenced athlete, Tia-Clair Toomey knew that it is important not to drop points here, so she was ready for an event like this, while some of her closest rivals dropped some points. However, even Tia-Clair could not beat the swimmers like Lucy Campbell and Amanda Barnhart, while Laura Horvath also beat her in a tight finish.
Men’s division
- Roman Khrennikov — 160 calories
- Dallin Pepper — 156 calories
- Jonne Koski — 154 calories
- Samuel Kwant — 153 calories
- Lazar Đukić — 152 calories
- Brent Fikowski — 152 calories
- Justin Medeiros — 151 calories
- Cole Greashaber — 148 calories
- Cole Sager — 148 calories
- Ricky Garard — 147 calories
Ricky Garard kept dropping points, but Roman Khrennikov picked them up. On day four, Roman won his first in-person event to put winning the Games this year within reach. Dallin Pepper and Jonne Koski tried to win the event by swimming, but Roman’s raw power on the Ski Erg won.
Workout 9 — Hat Trick
3 rounds for total time of:
- Sprint
- 20 wall-ball shots
- 6 dumbbell snatches
Rest 4 minutes between rounds
Women: 14-lb ball to 11 ft / Snatch 70-lb DB
Men: 20-lb ball to 12 ft / Snatch 100-lb DB
Women’s division
- Ellie Turner — 03:55.94
- Mallory O’Brien — 04:04.66
- Tia-Clair Toomey — 04:08.12
- Danielle Brandon — 04:08.80
- Kara Saunders — 04:10.73
- Gabriela Migała — 04:15.81
- Paige Semenza — 04:19.35
- Laura Horvath — 04:19.41
- Emma Lawson — 04:20.22
- Amanda Barnhart — 04:20.61
An exciting sprint race meant that there were no calculations in anyone’s performance. This ultimately made Ellie Turner win the event as the only woman to complete all three runs in under four minutes. Mal O’Brien finished in second, but despite Tia-Clair Toomey’s missed reps, she only managed to gain three points on her.
Men’s division
- Guilherme Malheiros — 02:30.07
- Justin Medeiros — 02:39.84
- Dallin Pepper — 02:43.10
- Nick Mathew — 02:44.77
- Roman Khrennikov — 02:46.26
- Lazar Đukić — 02:46.33
- Tudor Magda — 02:48.35
- Jay Crouch — 02:49.17
- Brent Fikowski — 02:49.38
- Patrick Vellner — 02:49.93
While Justin Medeiros was a runner-up to Guilherme Malheiros in this event, Ricky Garard was nowhere to be seen. So, Justin Medeiros used Garard’s mistakes and overtook him in the overall rankings despite not winning an event yet. However, Medeiros relies on his very consistent top five finishes in almost all events to win competitions.
Workout 10 — Sandbag Ladder
1-rep-max sandbag-to-shoulder
Women: Bags from 160-250 lb
Men: Bags from 240-340 lb
Women’s divison
- Dani Speegle — 250-lb
- Jacqueline Dahlstrøm — 240-lb
- Laura Horvath — 230-lb
- Amanda Barnhart — 230-lb
- Sydney Michalyshen — 230-lb
- Brooke Wells — 220-lb
- Paige Semenza — 210-lb
- Ellie Turner — 210-lb
- Emma McQuaid — 210-lb
- Tia-Clair Toomey — 210-lb
While many competitors put up impressive performances and even lifted sandbags heavier then their bodyweights, only Dani Speegle managed to lift the final bag. Surprisingly, one of the lighter competitors, Jacqueline Dahlstrøm, finished in second place, having lifted a 240-lb sandbag, while Laura Horvath placed third. Tia-Clair Toomey further improved her lead over Mal O’Brien.
Men’s division
- Gabriel Malheiros — 340-lb (T-first)
- Nick Mathew — 340-lb (T-first)
- Brent Fikowski — 340-lb
- Jayson Hopper — 340-lb

- Saxon Panchik — 330-lb
- Ricky Garard — 330-lb
- Andre Houdet — 320-lb
- Alex Vigneault — 320-lb
- Tim Paulson — 320-lb
In a truly unique happening, Gabriel Malheiros and Nick Mathew managed to tie in both the original event and the tiebreaker. In addition, Brent Fikowski beat Jayson Hopper for the third-place through the same tiebreaker that Malheiros and Mathew took part in.

- CrossFit Oslo Navy Blue — 490 calories

- 8th Day CrossFit Black — 484 calories
CrossFit Mayhem Freedom continued turning up when it mattered and grabbed another 100 points by burning 530 calories altogether. On the other hand, CrossFit Oslo Navy Blue only got a ninth place finish, which massively ruined their chances of winning the 2022 NOBULL CrossFit Games. CrossFit Reykjavik also made up a lot of ground in their top three chase, as 2x Fittest Woman On Earth®, Annie Thorisdottir, led them to another incredible performance.
Workout 8 — Dumbbell Highball

- CrossFit Mayhem Independence — 26:32.26
- CrossFit Westchase Red — 28:50.92
- CrossFit Nordic Original — 29:06.10
On day four of the 2022 NOBULL CrossFit Games, CrossFit Mayhem Freedom goes two for two in event wins. Reykjavik finished right behind Freedom and edged closer to the podium. At this point, CrossFit Reykjavik would be challenging Freedom for the title if they didn’t slip up on the fourth workout two days ago.

With their fifth consecutive event win, CrossFit Mayhem Freedom pretty much declared themselves as the 2022 NOBULL CrossFit Games champions. Two workouts are left for the final day, but something catastrophic would have to heppen for Freedom to drop a 57 point lead.

- Kristi Eramo O’Connell — 37:12.19
- Mallory O’Brien — 37:20.04
- Emma McQuaid — 37:58.62
First event of day three saw Gabriela Migała claim her first win, and Laura Horvath take second place. However, the 5x Champion Tia-Clair Toomey stole the show as she managed to claim the top spot overall for the first time this year.
Men’s Division
- Ricky Garard — 31:54.47
- Roman Khrennikov — 32:01.47
- Travis Mayer — 32:16.22
- Samuel Kwant — 32:47.67
- Jayson Hopper — 33:04.11
- Jeffrey Adler — 33:16.60
- Alex Vigneault — 33:53.84
- Justin Medeiros — 34:08.32
- Björgvin Karl Guðmundsson — 34:12.77
- Bayden Brown — 34:27.50
Ricky Garard once again hinted towards becoming the Fittest Man On Earth® this year, since no one is able to match his energy and desire. While he is winning events, some of his rivals like Justin Medeiros are starting to trail even more, so Garard’s overall score is looking very hard to beat. Roman Khrennikov is also doing exceptionally well for his debut at the CrossFit Games, as he is getting better with each following event.
Workout 6 — Up and Over
3 rounds for time:
- 12 muscle-ups
- 25 jump-overs
- 30 GHD sit-ups
Then,
- 84-ft weighted lunge

Women’s Division

- Mallory O’Brien — 12:58.91
- Emma Lawson — 13:29.56
- Haley Adams — 13:41.11
- Danielle Brandon — 13:41.83
- Kara Saunders — 13:46.47
- Matilde Garnes — 13:52.24
- Baylee Rayl — 14:15.70
- Paige Semenza — 14:30.20
- Arielle Loewen — 14:36.73
Women’s division definitely had a harder workout, since they had to jump over the same log as men, but are much shorter than their male colleagues. This did not pose a problem for Tia-Clair Toomey, who is known for incredible strength. Mal O’Brien attempted to leapfrog Tia-Clair to take the top spot, but Toomey comfortably defended it with one more workout to go.
Men’s Division
- Saxon Panchik — 12:40.00
- Justin Medeiros — 13:09.31
- Ricky Garard — 13:17.76
- Samuel Kwant — 13:37.84
- Noah Ohlsen — 13:38.20
- Björgvin Karl Guðmundsson — 13:39.71
- Cole Sager — 13:44.84
- Patrick Vellner — 14:09.22
- Uldis Upenieks — 14:13.72
- Spencer Panchik — 14:13.97
Saxon Panchik won the event with a sizable lead, but the most notable change this event brought was in the race for the silver medal overall. Roman Khrennikov only managed to finish in 15th place, while Justin Medeiros placed second. Unluckily for Medeiros, Ricky Garard finished just behind him, so Justin did not get to gain some significant points on the leader.
Workout 7 — Echo Press
For time:
- 30/25 Echo Bike Calories
- 10 block HSPU
- 20/15 Echo Bike Calories
- 10 block HSPU
- 20/15 Echo Bike Calories
- 10 block HSPU
- 30/25 Echo Bike Calories
Women: 2-in deficit
Men: 3.5-in deficit
Women’s division
- Alexis Raptis — 06:41.18
- Tia-Clair Toomey — 07:45.28
- Emma McQuaid — 08:01.72
- Caroline Conners — 08:36.64
- Dani Speegle — 08:57.34
- Paige Powers — 09:24.43
- Seungyeon Choi — 09:31.93
- Alex Willis — 09:39.33
- Lucy Campbell — 10:40.04
- Thuridur Erla Helgadottir — 10:52.51
Alexis Raptis moved with intention throught the entire workout, which ultimately resulted in 100 points and ending day three in the top 8. More notably, due to her second-place finish in this event, Tia-Clair Toomey increased her lead over Mal O’Brien to 44 points. At this point it seems that Tia-Clair is very likely to get her sixth title, but two more days of competition could change everything.
Men’s division
- Will Moorad — 06:30.15
- Jayson Hopper — 06:57.82
- Roman Khrennikov — 07:02.22
- Enrico Zenoni — 07:07.08
- Justin Medeiros — 07:29.07
- Spencer Panchik — 07:38.91
- André Houdet — 07:44.44
- Colten Mertens — 07:55.89
- Patrick Vellner — 08:08.35
- Guilherme Malheiros — 08:10.56
Will Moorad got the final 100 points of day three with an elegant performance. Handstand push-ups were no problem for him, and he walked over the finish line comfortably. Unfortunately, the overall leader at this time, Ricky Garard, did not perform well and placed 28th. As a result, Justin Medeiros and Roman Khrennikov were able to creep up on him. The lead remains with Garard going into the final two days, but he is unlikely to be satisfied with his performance.

It took three days for CrossFit Mayhem Freedom to win an event, but it was still enough for them to take over the top position overall. An extremely motivated Rich Froning lead his teammates to a dominating victory, as they once again became the favourites for this year’s CrossFit Games. This event proved to be much harder than expected, since only five teams were able to finish it.

- Haley Adams — 06:59.46
- Tia-Clair Toomey — 07:08.14
- Gabriela Migała — 07:17.19

- Thuridur Erla Helgadottir — 07:30.92
- Emma Lawson — 07:33.66
- Matilde Garnes — 07:38.23
Haley Adams knew from the start that the jerk portion of the workout would not score her big points, so she had to give it her all on the runs. Adams was very successful in executing her plan, as she was the only one to complete all the runs in under seven minutes. This even was also a make or break for Tia-Clair Toomey who did not crumble under pressure. Toomey excels in stressful situations, so she managed to fininsh the runs in the second fastest time. Gabriela Migała was the third-fastest in this event.
Men’s Division “Shuttle To Overhead A”
- Uldis Upenieks — 06:51.06
- Ricky Garard — 06:58.74

Uldis Upenieks ran the 400-600-800 meters in a combined time of 06:51.06, which ended up being enough for all 100 points in this event. Ricky Garard, who is obviously in the greatest shape of his life, got second place, having beaten Saxon Panchik by just 0.32 seconds. No one except these top three athletes managed to compete the three runs in under seven minutes.

- Tia-Clair Toomey — 18 reps
- Danielle Brandon — 15 reps
- Mal O’Brien — 14 reps
- Emma Lawson — 13 reps

- Gabriela Migała — 12 reps
- Brooke Wells — 12 reps
- Jacqueline Dahlstrøm — 12 reps
- Arielle Loewen — 12 reps
- Emma McQuaid — 12 reps
Tia-Clair Toomey’s past in olympic weightlifting definitely helped her to claim 100 points in this event, which were basically essential for her. Danielle Brandon posted yet another amazing performance and helped Tia-Clair reduce Mal O’Brien’s overall advantage.
Men’s Division “Shuttle To Overhead B”
- Jeffrey Adler — 19 reps

Jeffrey Adler ended up completing the most jerks, as 19 was enough for him to claim the 100 points. However, an epic battle for second and third place played out just behind him. Saxon Panchik edged out a second-place finish over three competitors who tied for third place, while Ricky Garard got the third-place through a tiebreaker.

Tactics played a huge factor in this event, as the teams had to perform another event immediately after finishing this one. CrossFit Milford won the Strong workout with a 1,325-pound total, while CrossFit Invictus failed to outlift them by 10 pounds. Apart from these two, only one more Team managed to Total 1,300 pounds and that was the CrossFit Mayhem Freedom.

Even though some athletes didn’t complete a lap on the bike in the first workout of the 2022 NOBULL CrossFit Games, it also showcased some incredible performances. For example, Haley Adams managed to win a CrossFit Games event for the first time in her career, having narrowly beaten Tia-Clair Toomey. The 17-year-old Emma Lawson also secured a podium finish and gave herself a platform for a historical overall placing.

- Willy Georges — 37:25.29
- Moritz Fiebig — 37:29.71
- Lazar Đukić — 37:48.00
Men’s division saw multiple athletes miss a lap and get severely punished for it. However, Ricky Garard proved that he has still got what it takes despite not competing at the highest level for a long time. The race was a bit disappointing for Jonne Koski, who led at the start but eventually fell to second in the final meters. The 2021 Fittest Man On Earth®, Justin Medeiros, once again displayed his consistency with a third-place finish. Garard won the event, taking first place.

- Mal O’Brien
- Jacqueline Dahlstrøm
- Arielle Loewen
- Thuridur Erla Helgadottir
- Haley Adams
- Kristi Eramo O’Connell
Tia-Clair Toomey suffered the greatest loss in this event, as she did not even manage to qualify for the semifinal round. She stumbled on her single-unders and had to start from scratch, which ultimately resulted in a 23rd place finish. Despite how it may sound, this was one of the worst finishes of Tia-Clair’s career.
The complexity of double-under crossovers meant that no woman was able to complete the final stage of the workout. However, Danielle Brandon managed to complete the most reps in the given time frame and was closely followed by Rebecca Fuselier. Emma Lawson grabbed another stunning 3rd place finish and put herself in a great position going forward.
Men’s division
- Nick Mathew
- Guilherme Malheiros
- Justin Medeiros
- Pat Vellner
- Ricky Garard
- Will Moorad
- Jonne Koski
- Lazar Đukić
- Roman Khrennikov

In the men’s division, only Nick Mathew and Guilherme Malheiros completed the entire workout. However, Nick felt no pressure as Guilherme finished just before the time ran out. While the majority of the athletes got stuck on the double-under crossovers, Justin Medeiros got stuck on the next implement, which was the handstand walk.
