The 2022 World’s Strongest Man is underway and the leaderboards are starting to form. Tuesday, May 24th is day one of this five-day competition, which is set to finish on Sunday, May 29. The 2022 World’s Strongest Man is divided into three days of qualifying and two days of finals. The first day featured two events, which were a Loading Race and a Deadlift Ladder.
In the qualifying stages of the 2022 World’s Strongest Man, the competitors are separated into five groups of six athletes, and only two from each group will go to the finals. Every group performs the same events, so comparisons of favorites can start in the early stages of the WSM. There is no Livestream of the contest, as CBS Sports Network will release the footage sometime after the competition is done. However, you can follow the 2022 World’s Strongest Man results, recaps, and updates here at Fitness Volt.

2022 World’s Strongest Man Day One Event Recap
Event 1 — Loading Race
The 2022 World’s Strongest Man competitors had to carry five implements for approximately 8 meters and load them on the platform. The implements had to be placed in order and were as follows: Cannonball, Anvil, Sandbag, Keg, and Sandbag again. Each implement weighed 120 kilograms (265 pounds), but their awkward shapes are what made it more difficult. The time limit was 75 seconds, so the aim was to load as many implements in the shortest time span possible.
Group 1
- Tom Stoltman — 5 in 0:38.39s / 6 points
- Kevin Faires — 5 in 0:43.36s / 5 points
- Aivars Smaukstelis — 5 in 0:44.37s / 4 points
- Andy Black — 5 in 0:50.81s / 3 points
- Gabriel Rheaume — 5 in 0:53.39s / 2 points
- Manuel Angulo — 4 in 1:10.64s / 1 points
Group one’s first event went pretty smoothly. Tom Stoltman has repeatedly shown through numerous atlas stones performances that almost no one can surpass him in picking up and loading implements. Kevin Faires and Aivars Smaukstelis, however, seem to have started a great fight, as only one second separated them.
Group 2
- Mitchell Hooper — 5 in 0:38.31s / 6 points
- Brian Shaw — 5 in 0:45.00s / 5 points
- Gabriel Peña — 5 in 0:45.88s / 4 points
- Konstantine Janashia — 5 in 0:49.47s / 3 points
- Bobby Thompson — 5 in 0:49.70s / 2 points
- Mark Felix — 5 in 0:54.96s / 1 point
Mitchell Hooper started his World’s Strongest Man debut by winning his group, and even claiming a faster time than Tom Stoltman from the previous group. Brian Shaw also finished in a very valuable 2nd place and beat Gabriel Peña by less than one second.
Group 3
- Oleksii Novikov — 5 in 0:37.25s / 6 points
- Adam Bishop — 5 in 0:45.85s / 5 points
- Mika Torro — 5 in 0:47.84s / 4 points
- Trey Mitchell — 5 in 0:48.78s / 3 points
- Rob Kearney — 5 in 0:54.62s / 2 points
- Grzegorz Szymanski — 4 in 0:29.85s / 1 point
Throughout all competitions this year, Oleksii Novikov has maintained a great level of performance. With six points from event one, he outdid the previous group winners. Adam Bishop also earned an important five points ahead of Mika Torro and Trey Mitchell who were both just seconds slower.
Group 4
- Martins Licis — 5 in 37.73s / 6 points
- Maxime Boudreault — 5 in 40.68s / 5 points
- Pavlo Kordiyaka — 5 in 0:43.70s / 4 points
- Gavin Bilton — 5 in 0:45.76s / 3 points
- Shane Flowers — 5 in 0:48.70s / 2 points
- Nedzmin Ambeskovic — 1 implement / 1 point
The 2019 World’s Strongest Man, Martins Licis, won the first event of his group and proved that he is serious about winning his second title. Maxime Boudreault’s performance was also very impressive, so both athletes proved why they were considered favorites going into the 2022 WSM.
Group 5
- Luke Stoltman — 5 in 0:37.95s / 6 points
- Kelvin De Ruiter — 5 in 0:39.18s / 5 points
- Eythor Melsted — 5 in 0:49.69s / 4 points
- Jean-Stephen Coraboeuf — 5 in 0:52.70s / 3 points
- Evan Singleton — 5 in 1:08.38s / 2 points
- Kim Ujarak — 4 in 0:34.79s / 1 point
Luke Stoltman has stated in his past few videos that he is coming to win the 2022 World’s Strongest Man, and will not settle for anything else. His blistering speed in the first event certainly gives hope that his dream is realistic.
Event 2 — Deadlift Ladder
In the second event of the 2022 World’s Strongest Man, competitors had to deadlift five progressively heavier loaded barbells. The weight progression was as follows: 300-kg (660-lb) / 320-kg (705-lb) / 340-kg (750-lb) / 360-kg (795-lb) / 380-kg (840-lb). If an athlete failed to lift all barbells or has done the same as someone else, then the fastest to do so ranked higher. The time limit was once again 75 seconds.
Group 1
- Tom Stoltman — 5 in 0:51.46s / 6 points
- Gabriel Rheaume — 4 in 0:39.03s / 5 points
- Kevin Faires — 4 in 0:45.89s / 4 points
- Aivars Smaukstelis — 4 in 0:55.91s / 3 points
- Andy Black — 4 in 01:02.30s / 2 points
- Manuel Angulo — 3 in 0:38.62s / 1 point
Tom Stoltman won the second event of the 2022 World’s Strongest Man, as he was the only man in his group to pull all five deadlifts. Tom has never won his group in the World’s Strongest Man contest, but these results from day one hint towards a first-place finish for him. Gabriel Rheaume finished in second place after pulling 4 implements faster than other competitors.
Group 2
- Mitchell Hooper — 5 in 0:31.21s / 6 points
- Bobby Thompson — 5 in 0:42.56s / 5 points
- Gabriel Peña — 5 in 0:52.53s / 4 points
- Mark Felix — 4 in 0:28.64s / 3 points
- Brian Shaw — 4 in 0:32.20s / 2 points
- Konstantine Janashia — 3 in 0:19.05s / 1 point
Mitchell Hooper once again won the event with a very dominant display. He will go to sleep tonight with a 100% win rate at the World’s Strongest Man. Brian Shaw is finishing day one in third place after coming second to last on the deadlift ladder.
Group 3
- Oleksii Novikov — 5 in 0:35.64s / 6 points
- Adam Bishop — 5 in 0:37.44s / 5 points
- Trey Mitchell — 5 in 0:59.00s / 4 points
- Rob Kearney — 4 in 0:41.28s / 3 points
- Mika Torro — 2 in 0:26.65s / 2 points
- Grzegorz Szymanski — 2 in 0:26.91s / 1 point
Oleksii Novikov has followed Tom’s and Mitchell’s steps, as he also finished day one on max points. Adam Bishop placed second, having finished just after Oleksii. Two points separate Novikov and Bishop overall, but only one man will qualify for the finals of the 2022 World’s Strongest Man directly.
Group 4
- Martins Licis — 5 in 0:43.59s / 6 points
- Gavin Bilton — 5 in 0:52.28s / 5 points
- Shane Flowers — 4 in 0:36.69s / 4 points
- Maxime Boudreault — 3 in 0:21.12s / 3 points
- Pavlo Kordiyaka — 3 in 0:38.50s / 2 points
- Nedzmin Ambeskovic — 3 in 0:45.45s / 1 point
Martins Licis also won his second event of the day, which was expected as he focused a lot on this event in his training sessions. However, Gavin Bilton’s five points from this event has made him level overall with Maxime Boudreault. Both men will aim to finish higher than the other, as it would give them advantage in the potential Stone Off.
Group 5
- Luke Stoltman — 4 in 0:42.87s / 6 points
- Jean-Stephen Coraboeuf — 4 in 0:53.87s / 5 points
- Kim Ujarak — 4 in 0:56.48s / 4 points
- Eythor Melsted — 3 in 0:40.88 / 3 points
- Kelvin De Ruiter — 3 in 0:56.44s / 2 points
- Evan Singleton — Withdrew
Luke Stoltman utilized the fact that Evan Singleton has withdrawn, so he did not even need to lift all five progressively heavier barbells to win the event. This way he preserved his strength and energy for what is yet to come.
